And in particular, the country’s impressive manufacturing history. If you like rich and inherently formal this style may be yours. circle

Interior design trends say a lot about the times in which they emerged. From the opulent gold accents of the Gilded Age to the vibrant psychedelic patterns of the 1970s, décor mimics what’s going on in society at large. But that doesn’t mean all of these trends are nice to look at. We’ve spent some time uncovering the worst design trends of all time. Read on to find out why you should consider a remodel if any of these 40 looks are in your home.

Pink bathrooms were huge in the middle of the 20th century, largely thanks to First Lady Mamie Eisenhower. She famously redecorated one of the White House bathrooms in pink, which eventually resulted in the nickname “The Pink Palace.”

Pam Kueber of Retro Renovation says that approximately 5 million out of the 20 million homes built between 1946 and 1966 had at least one pink bathroom.

8 Interior Design Trends That Are So Over in 2019

Jacki Roig

Your home’s got style—and boy, did you work to achieve it. You followed design blogs, pored over Pinterest boards, and chose accent pieces and colors to add just the right note. That is, you did five years ago. Or 10.

But guess what? Style isn’t static, and your home decor shouldn’t be, either. Even the most beloved design elements can start to feel unbearably stale after a while.

“Some design trends come and go with dizzying speed,” says New York City designer Ellen O’Neill. “Others seem to just hang around long past their sell-by date.”

We won’t tell you to ditch the stuff that speaks to your soul, changing trends be damned. But if you’re itching for a design upgrade and aren’t sure where to start, ask yourself if your home is sporting any of these looks that have worn out their welcome.

These are the design hangers-on the

Interior design trends that defined the 2010s

Jacki Roig

The 2010s tested interior design like no other decade. The recession of 2007–2009 led people to question long-held assumptions about design, resulting in dramatic changes in how shoppers choose what they buy, where we all get inspired, and what designers create. Modern design became more conscious, more engaged, more exciting, more democratic, more individualistic. It was applied in so many new ways to so many new challenges.

Are we better off for it all? It’s debatable.

I started covering design in 2010, a challenging time for the industry, to say the least. The country was reeling from the recession, which was felt deeply in homes, as millions of families lost them during the foreclosure crisis and never recovered. Construction stalled, and the projects that survived were value engineered within an inch of their lives. Budget materials like plywood and oriented strand board were everywhere. Cautious retailers played it safe with

Jacki Roig

You might think that the reams of analysis done on office space would have by now turned every workplace into a humming hive of engagement and productivity. Earlier this year, we even got an advance look at a research paper that outlined alternative design strategies to make workers happier.

The paper, Ethonomics: Designing For The Principles Of The Modern Workplace–authored by Teknion, in collaboration with design expertslike Joan Blumenfeld, principal of Perkins+Will, one of this year’s Most Innovative Companies–revealed that the workplace is ripe for reinvention.
