Interior design is a growing field and is especially suited to people who want to run their own business or work from home. According to the 2010-2011 Occupational Outlook Handbook, the number of interior designers was expected to grow 19 percent between 2008 to 2018 – from 71,700 designers to 85,600. This is faster than average for all occupations. The Bureau of Labor Statistics, which publishes the Handbook, expect that demand for interior designers will grow in homes and businesses, making this a great career option with a lot of scope for niche work.

Back in 2016, home design start-up Homepolish raised $20 million in funding. This week, CEO Noa Santos told designers it’s all gone. “We frankly don’t have the funding left to run the business on an ongoing basis,” Santos said in a video conference call on Wednesday with the company’s remaining employees, according to a recording provided to Intelligencer. “The bank has the legal right to all money it is owed, which is in the millions, before any potential creditor would receive any money owed to them, that includes me.”

The company laid off most of its staff and abandoned its Manhattan lease in August, the design trade publication Business of Home reported last month. In June, remaining staff were placed on an “unpaid leave of absence.” “Many were then asked to sign contracts indicating no formal promise

So you want to work in interior design | Education

If you think interior design is just about choosing fabrics and collecting colour charts, think again.

Family Room Before And After

When interior designer Stacey Cohen first saw the dark fireplace and oversized built-in cabinets in the family room of her clients’s home, she knew she had her work cut out for her.

The fireplace sat at an awkward angle, but moving it could have resulted in mechanical complications, and the built-ins completely overwhelmed the space. Both fixtures left the room feeling disjointed and thrown together, far from a cohesive spot for the family to gather.

The plan: To keep it simple and clean, Cohen says. “The goal for the room was to be sophisticated and timeless.”

Cohen started the room’s transformation by integrating a hand-sculpted silver leaf cabinet where the built-ins used to be, and covering the fireplace in a beautiful limestone by Maro Bianco.

Banana leaf wallpaper was added to the rest of the room to mimic the fireplace’s new look, and furniture clad in various neutral
