Energy-Efficient Building Design

Building logo

When asked to describe characteristics of an energy-efficient building, most might list the following: well-insulated walls, a ventilated roof with a thick layer of insulation over the ceiling, quality windows with low-E glass, and a high-efficiency heating and cooling system. Surprisingly, many buildings with these features experience higher than anticipated utility bills, elevated levels of moisture or indoor air pollutants, and premature deterioration caused by moisture accumulation in walls and roofs. Why is this happening and what can be done to avoid these problems?

RULES FOR ENERGY-EFFICIENT BUILDING

RULE #1: Seal all joints in the building shell. It doesn’t make sense to invest in well-insulated walls and ceilings yet do little to block air flow around and through the insulated cavities. Wood-to-wood and drywall-to-wood joints in the exterior shell of a building are not airtight and should be sealed with gaskets, foams, caulks, or air barrier films. The illustration Air

Accessible design is growing. But can it be beautiful?

It was nearly 30 years ago that the Americans With Disabilities Act established its accessibility guidelines to protect the rights of people with disabilities. Accessible design has grown up a lot since then.

Those standard design requirements for public, commercial and government facilities were a critical step for the ADA, governing such elements as wheelchair lifts, curb ramps and handrails. But as designers have begun to understand the vast — and growing — demand for accessible living, the concept has evolved from a practical matter to a complex idea about beauty, equity and what it means to live well.

Architects and designers who are disabled themselves have brought attention to the need for a more holistic approach than grab bars and wheelchair-accessible hallways, a more homey feel than hospital chic. And many businesses are simply looking to the future: “There’s a giant wave coming,” Seattle-area interior designer Melinda Sechrist says

COCOCOZY Design House: Exterior Paint Picking With Benjamin Moore

Choices, choices, choices!

Anyhooo… first step of the paint process is picking the exterior paint. I bring up Steve because he has always been the person I look to for home remodels and because his own home is the inspiration for the colors of the design house.

Stunning Benjamin Moore colors!

The vision: slightly off white with black trim and maybe just maybe a colorful door in a blue and or green shade. I was in Claremont, the town where I spent my preteen and teen years, and I ran across a darker colored Spanish style/Mediterranean inspired home and I nixed that as option.

This is the color I decided to steer away from…saw this house while I was on a walk in my hometown…while the style of the house is on point with the COCOCOZY Design House, the color is too dark and too yellow.

Green room – Wikipedia

In show business, the green room is the space in a theatre or similar venue that functions as a waiting room and lounge for performers before and after a performance, and during the show when they are not engaged on stage. Green rooms typically have seating for the performers, such as upholstered chairs and sofas.

The origin of the term is often ascribed to such rooms historically being painted green.[1][2] Modern green rooms need not necessarily adhere to a specifically green color scheme, though the theatrical tradition of the name remains.

Possible sources of the term[edit]

The definitive origin of the term is lost to history, which has led to many theories and claims.

One of the oldest stories is that London’s Blackfriars Theatre (1599) included a room behind the scenes, which happened to be painted green; where the actors waited to go on stage.
